The cruiser "Aurora" moored at Petrovskaya Embankment opposite to school of Nakhimov, is not only a monument of domestic shipbuilding, but also a symbol of the Soviet era

    Called in honor of the frigate "Aurora" which was heroically protecting Petropavlovsk - on - Kamchatka during the Crimean war of 1853-1856, the cruiser has been built on the St. Petersburg shipyard "New Admiralty" in 1897. On May 11, 1900 it has been floated. In July, 1903 "Aurora" has become operational the fighting ships of fleet of Russia and has received baptism of fire in 1905 in Tsusimsky battle of the Russian-Japanese war. In the years of World War I "Aurora" took active part in military operations on the Baltic Sea, and at the end of 1916 has been put on capital repairs on Franco-Russian plant in Petrograd.
   "Aurora" has played an important role in revolutionary events of 1917. In the night of October 25 (with 6 for November 7 on new style) "Aurora" has taken part in armed revolt. At 21 hour 40 minutes on a conventional sign from the Peter and Paul Fortress the nasal tool of the cruiser "Aurora" has made the single shot which has become a signal to the beginning of storm of the Winter Palace. As a result of storm the Provisional government which was in the Winter Palace has been arrested, and the power has passed to RSDRP. The new era in the history of Russia has begun.
