I tried to get a sense of the wonder of Baikal,
but its majesty was just too great for words to fit it all

The sculpture of a babr. In the historical part of Irkutsk there was established a bronze sculpture of a babr – a mythical animal. Babr holds a sable in teeth. The sculpture was established on a low pedestal. City dwellers liked the monument, as well as city guests. Many different people make photos with it.

On the Irkutsk coat of arms that has been officially approved in 1790 by Catherine II there is a tiger holding a sable in teeth. At the time of the approval by Alexander II of the Irkutsk coat of arms, the description of the coat of arms where it has been written "babr" has come to heraldry of St. Petersburg, but not "tiger". (in Irkutsk these words were synonyms). A certain official has seen a mistake and has corrected the letter "а" to "o". In addition, the beaver bearing in teeth of a sable approved in the summer of 1878 was born. Of course, no beavers on the coat of arms of Irkutsk have been represented, but here babr in drawings it became similar to a beaver. The large tail similar to a tail of a beaver, and a paw with membranes was added to him. This is how this mythical animal who is called as "a heraldic babr" was created.
